Smart Break Intervention Study
The four month Smart Break Intervention Study was conducted by the University of Jyväskylä, Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius/Health Science Unit.
Test sites
- Company 1: specializing in stevedoring, forwarding and shipping activities
- Company 2: sister company to company 1, offering tailor made harbor operator and factory service solutions
Participants (n=45)
- Company 1: office workers and managers
- Company 2: truck drivers

The goals
- To prevent sitting disease in physically inactive workplaces
- To test Smart Break for 3+3 minute physical activation during a working day
- To evaluate results by user responses and physical check up before and after
The Smart Break intervention (4 months)
- 3 minutes before coffee breaks (morning and afternoon)
- 3 workouts (1 minute upper body, 1 minute lower body, 1 minute cardio)
- Training in coffee room (large TV screen) or by own computer
- Monthly rewards
The key results
- Improved mobility
- Increased muscle strength
- Less resting pain
- Lower blood pressure
- More energy
- Increased motivation to move after the work day
